Solid Waste announces final yard waste bin pickup

HURON During Monday evenings Huron City Commission meeting, Solid Waste Department Superintendent Dale Fortin made the announcement that his department would not pick up green yard waste containers during the week of November 10 through November 14.

Fortin explained that as the temperatures drop, yard waste can freeze overnight in bins, which could lead to damage to containers during pickup. Green bins will be picked up the following week, November 17-21, on regular pickup day.

There will also be no yard waste container pick up during the week of Nov. 24-28. Further citywide pickup will be based on outside temperatures.

Fortin also discussed the progress of resident access to the yard waste drop-off site through the new entrance that will be accessible with identification. He stated that setting up the database for the scanner at the gate is the current holdup, but he said the hope is that the system is up and running before winter.

The Solid Waste Department presented an application to combine all the facets of the department into one permit through the state. This was approved.

Commissioners also:
– Approved a raffle for medical expenses, submitted by Alvin Schnathorst, to take place at Fire Pit Pizza from November 20 to December 31.
– Approved an alcoholic beverage license application submitted by Top Floor Events for a Chamber Mixer on December 9 at East River Nursery.
– Set a public hearing for November 10 to consider 2026 renewals for sale of alcoholic beverages.
– Approved the successful completion of the 60-day probationary period for Garrett Welch, water sewer treatment, effective Oct. 24.
– Approved a wage change for police officer Pywe Der upon completion of Last Resort Firearms Training and receiving his active shooter instruction certification.

With a brief meeting, Mayor Mark Robish then gave an update on the city departments that he oversees in his role and announced that, in upcoming meetings with a shorter agenda, he would have commissioners do the same with their departments.
