HURON –– The Huron City Commission approved a contract for private development and a development agreement with Greater Huron Development Corporation (GHDC) on Monday night. The two approvals by the commission move forward the plans for lodging in the Southtown area.
Commissioners also approved the change of a quit claim deed with GHDC for property in Southtown that had been purchased by Center For Independence for the purpose of building a client home. Upon survey, the original property was found to have a gas line running under the property, making it unable to be developed.
The meeting opened with two conditional use permits for Airbnb/vacation rental homes. The first was filed by Kristen Murray at 317 Lincoln Ave. SW. The second was filed by K&J Holdings for three properties at 1845 Iowa Ave. SE, 1530 Iowa Ave. SE and 155 4th St. NE. These were all approved. After approval, Commissioner Bryan Smith questioned city planner Barry Cranston about the influx of recent similar applications. Cranston explained that other similar properties exist in the city, but shift in state laws is encouraging registration with the city by current host homes.
Mayor Mark Robish encouraged Huron residents to attend Winter Fest on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and to enjoy the Burger Battle during the month of February.
City Engineer Brett Runge presented multiple items to the commission for approval. The first was a request to bid for the 2026 street milling and overlay contract with a budget of $1,292,800. The second was a request for proposals for design build services for work on Memorial Baseball Park with a budget of $1,200,000. He also requested approval of a bid from Sanitation Products, Inc. for 10 roll-off boxes in the amount of $77,470. Finally, Runger requested approval of a bid from I-State Truck Center for a semi tractor for the solid waste department in the amount of $163,324. All four items were approved.
Commissioners also:
- Approved the appointment of Dr. Sam Carr to fill a vacant position on the Lake and Riverfront Committee, effective Feb. 3.
- Approved the appointment of Sam Brodeen to fill the remainder of the board term of Eh Mo Shee, expiring June 1, on the Parks & Recreation Board.
