Roosevelt uses long-range shooting to defeat Tigers

HURON –– The Huron Tigers stormed back from a rough first quarter to hold a halftime lead, but elite three-point shooting by the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders keyed a 72-65 Roosevelt victory Tuesday at Huron Arena.

The second-ranked Rough Riders finished the night with 14 three point makes, hitting more than 50 percent of their long-range attempts.

The three-point shooting for the Rough Riders was spot-on to open the game as Bryson Skogsberg and Deondre Painter nailed deep balls to open the game. Blake Ellwein got a bucket on a back cut on an out-of-bounds play to get Huron on the board.

Blake would drive down the lane to get within 6-4, but Justin Bilal nailed a wing three for Roosevelt. Capital Schmaus was fouled on a three-point attempt and nailed all three free throws to give the visitors a 12-4 lead.

Myles Ellwein hit a wing three, and Painter responded with a pair of free throws.

James Shoultz Jr. hit one of two free throws, but as time ran out on the first quarter, Schmaus drove in for a quick basket to make it 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.

After some frustrating first-quarter misses, Davis Chase was able to score on a reverse layup to open the second. Anderson Porisch hit a three from the wing to get the Tigers within 16-13.

Chase then went on his own run. He drove in, got the bucket, and was fouled, hitting the free throw to tie the game at 16. He then got a tip and was fouled. He made the free throw and then sank a three the next time down the court to give Huron a 22-16 lead.

Skogsberg got one of two free throws to give Roosevelt its first point of the second quarter with 3:36 left in the first half. Chase responded with a baseline jumper. Anderson Porisch then got a reverse layup to push the Tiger lead to 26-17.

Memphis Bylander came off the bench and rattled in a three for Roosevelt. Anderson Porisch then got an offensive rebound and put it in for a 28-20 Huron lead.

Bylander hit a baseline jumper, Blake Ellwein scored a pull-up jumper, and Bilal nailed a deep wing three to bring the Rough Riders within 30-25 as the teams headed in for half.

Skogsberg began a big second half with a three to open scoring in the third quarter. Blake Ellwein got his own rebound to keep Huron up 32-28.

Carson Hoines scored a basket underneath and then was goaltended to get Roosevelt back to 32-32.
Painter then got a steal and made the layup and was fouled to put Roosevelt up 35-32.

Porisch hit one of two free throws, then Skogsberg hit another three to make it 38-33.

Chase would get points in back-to-back trips, getting a bucket on a strong post move and then getting fouled and hitting both free throws to pull Huron within one, 38-37.

Skogsberg responded with a three and then got a steal and hit one of two from the line. Painter dropped in a pair of free throws to make it 44-37.

Chase drove through the lane for two, and then he and Akol Thyab got tangled up on the Roosevelt end, leading to a technical foul on Thyab. Blake sank the technical free throws and then was fouled on the ensuing possession, hitting both free throws to bring the Tigers within 44-43.

Single free throws back and forth for the two teams had the score 46-44 Roosevelt, but Schmaus nailed a quick trigger three as the third quarter ended to send the teams to the final frame with the visitors leading 49-44.

Blake got a bucket on his own rebound, but Skogsberg nailed a corner three. Porisch got a left-handed jump hook to close within four, 52-48.

Bilal then nailed a three and Schmaus got a three with an Ellwein free throw in between to make it quickly 58-49.

Chase got a reverse layup and Ellwein got a three from the top of the key, but. Bilal responded each time with a three.

After Painter got a steal and hit a pair of free throws, Roosevelt had their biggest lead, 66-54.

Ellwein got a putback and a drive down the lane, but Bilal hit a pair of free throws to keep it 68-58 Roosevelt.

Ellwein made a slick move in the post, then Bylander hit a baseline jumper. Ellwein would get a steal and two free throws, but time was running out on Huron.

Mason Jurgens hit a corner three with 15 seconds left to cut the lead to 71-65, but Painter hit one of two free throws and the Tigers couldn’t get a three. Roosevelt closed out a 72-65 win.

Huron coach Tim Buddenhagen recognized that Roosevelt shot very well, but he said the loss was fairly simple to figure out.

“Too many points in the second half,” he sighed. “They shot it well, give them credit.”

Roosevelt moves to 12-1, their ninth win in a row, with four players in double-figure scoring. Skogsberg had 18 and Bilal had 17. Each had five three-point baskets.

Painter had 13 points, and Schmaus added 12.

Huron (9-4) was led by Blake Ellwein with 26 points and eight rebounds. Chase had 22 points. Anderson Porisch chipped in 10.

Buddenhagen was pleased with his team’s offensive play.

“I thought we moved the basketball well. We shot well,” he stated. “When the other team hits 14 threes, you’re not going to win many of those games.”

Buddenhagen added, “Now we’ve seen them; we know we can compete. We need to go out and take the games this weekend.”

The Tigers head out west to play at Spearfish and Sturgis on Friday and Saturday.
