City approves new golf course bridge

HURON – The Huron City Commission approved a new bridge at Broadland Creek Golf Course. The previous bridge was not long enough due to banks eroding around the bridge.

True North Steel was awarded a steel vehicle bridge that is eight feet wide and 45 feet long with an H-10 load rating near hole 10 of the course. The submitted quote was $45,928, roughly $1,600 below the budgeted amount. The bridge was approved for June/July delivery.

The commission approved a pay request for Dakota Avenue work to BX Civil and Construction Inc. for $460,353.24.

Finally, the commission approved the intergovernmental agreement contract with the South Dakota Public Assurance Alliance with slight changes in the contract language from previous versions that were explained by Finance Director Paulynn Carey.

Commissioners also:

  • Approved the employment of Ryan Swartz as a Water Sewer Maintenance uncertified position, effective Feb. 23, with a 1040-hour probationary period.
  • Approved the employment of Hsa Htoo for the Solid Waste Maintenance 1 position, effective Feb. 23, with a 1040-hour probationary period.
  • Approved the promotion of Schaun Schnathorst to the assistant city engineer position, effective Feb. 22, with a 1040-hour probationary period.
  • Acknowledged an update that the solid waste superintendent recruitment plan with updated job descriptions, wage information, and timeline will be presented to the city commission at the Feb. 23 meeting.
  • Approved a bingo permit for Huron Area Senior Center each Thursday evening, beginning Feb. 19.

City offices will be closed and no city commission meeting will occur on Monday, Feb. 16, in observance of President’s Day.

The Solid Waste Department rubble site will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16. Garbage and recycling pickup scheduled for Monday will be picked up on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
