WATERTOWN –– Prairie Lakes Healthcare System is proud to share that Dr. Sarah Reiffenberger, MD, FAAFP, family medicine physician at Prairie Lakes Brown Clinic – Northridge, has been named South Dakota Family Physician of the Year by the South Dakota Academy of Family Physicians (SDAFP).

Dr. Sarah has been a trusted and respected physician in the Watertown community for more than 31 years, dedicating her entire career to providing compassionate, comprehensive care to individuals and families throughout northeastern South Dakota. A native of Huron, she chose to remain in her home state to practice family medicine rooted in whole-person care, strong relationships, and deep community values.

“I am incredibly honored by this recognition,” said Dr. Sarah Reiffenberger. “Family medicine has always been about relationships for me—walking alongside patients and families through all stages of life. To serve the Watertown community for more than three decades has been a true privilege, and I’m grateful to my patients, colleagues, and Prairie Lakes for the trust and support they’ve all shown throughout my career.”

Throughout her career, Dr. Sarah has delivered hundreds of babies and built lasting, multi-generational relationships with patients who continue to seek her care year after year. Her approach to medicine reflects the true spirit of family medicine—caring for patients across all stages of life while fostering trust, continuity, and connection.

In addition to her clinical excellence, Dr. Sarah has demonstrated exceptional leadership, service, and commitment to education. She served six years on the Board of Directors of the South Dakota Academy of Family Physicians, including an extended term as President during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing stability and guidance during a time of unprecedented challenge. A passionate educator and mentor, she has guided countless medical students and clinicians and has presented more than 30 Knowledge Self-Assessment (KSA) sessions at statewide continuing medical education conferences.

Dr. Sarah has also been a strong advocate for community wellness and preventive health. While her husband, Dr. Dan Reiffenberger, founded the annual Hospital Hill Run, she played a key supportive role in its success and co-founded a local running club to encourage healthy lifestyles within the community.

Balancing professional leadership with devoted motherhood, Dr. Sarah exemplifies the heart of family medicine – compassionate, committed, community-focused, and deeply respected by patients and peers alike.
