A piece of Huron’s musical history is taking center stage as the Huron High School Music Department launches a fundraising effort to refurbish its 106-year-old Steinway Grand Piano.
The Steinway, originally built in 1920, has served generations of Huron students and performers. The instrument was last partially restored in 2001 and has since endured decades of continued use. Despite its age and wear, the piano remains a vital part of the school’s music program and performance space.
The estimated cost of the full refurbishment is $80,000. The restoration will address the piano’s internal mechanics, soundboard, action, and overall performance quality, ensuring the instrument can continue to be used for decades to come. Through grants from the Huron Youth Leadership Council, Spirit Card, and Northwestern Energy, along with generous donations from the Huron Music Parents, the Lions Club, and proceeds from the Singing Valentine fundraiser, the Huron High School Music Department has raised $11,000 toward the goal. With ongoing grant applications and growing community sponsorships, the music department believes the restoration goal is not far from being achieved.
To kick off the fundraising campaign, the Huron High School Music Department will host a Steinway Grand Piano Fundraiser Recital on Tuesday, February 17, at 7 p.m. in the Huron High School Auditorium. The evening will feature performances by music staff, current students, and alumni, highlighting the piano’s role in the school’s musical legacy.
The event is open to the public, with free-will donations accepted. Additional fundraising efforts during the evening will include a bake sale and opportunities to “sponsor a key” as part of the restoration campaign. Attendees will also have the chance to learn more about the piano’s history and the restoration process.
“This piano has been part of countless concerts, rehearsals, and memories for our students and community,” said HS Choir Director Tabitha Unruh. “Restoring it is an investment not only in an instrument, but in the future of music education in Huron.”
Community members who are unable to attend the recital but wish to contribute to the project will have additional opportunities to donate throughout the campaign.
