Huron native receives Doctor of Education and Education Leadership Degree

GALLATIN, Tenn. –– Marilyn (Henry) Arwood, Gallatin, Tenn., formerly of Huron, earned and was granted the Doctor of Education and Education Leadership Degree, Magna Cum Laude, this past December from Liberty University, Lynchburg, Va.

Dr. Arwood’s 38-year teaching career began with seven children in five different grades in a one-room Beadle County country school known as Fairfield No. 3. The school was located approximately five miles northwest of Huron with a three-member school board comprised of members Olson, Olson and Olson.

She continued teaching positions as an elementary teacher in Dupree, Willow Lake, and the Huron Public Schools System. A couple years prior to moving with her husband and family to the Washington, D.C., area, she was the founder and owner of the ‘Seven Dwarf’s Nursery’ Daycare Center in Huron. 

She was a co-author of the original Day Care Operator’s Licensing Law for the State of South Dakota.  

Her continued teaching positions were in the Washington, D.C., metro area of Fairfax County, Va., where she served six years as an elementary school classroom teacher to include several years as a gifted and talented teacher. She ended her tenure in the Fairfax County Public Schools System by retiring after eighteen years as an Elementary School Principal, ten of the last years at Sangster Elementary School, a thousand-student elementary school.

Dr. Arwood added an additional two years employment in neighboring Arlington County, Va., School System as the Director of Gifted and Talented Services.

She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Huron College and a Master’s Degree from George Mason University, Fairfax, Va.

Marilyn is married to former Huron resident, Lowell Arwood; they have five adult offspring.

Dr. Arwood is the daughter of the late and former Huron residents, Mr. and Mrs. Winfield D. Henry and the daughter-in-law of the late and former Huron residents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon ‘Bud’ Arwood.
