Letter – Jim Schmidt 2-21-26

To the editor:

To the 40+ people who signed my petition and those who were afraid to, you are not forgotten. We have not given up. The county and city set this mess up and hold no responsisbility for the noise we have to endure.

I know no other place in South Dakota where a range is right up to the city limits, with no sound barrier between it and home dwellings. A chain link fence is not a barrier.

But when the county and city washed their hands of the problem, the Izaak Walton Sportsmen’s Club sat down for a discussion about the noise. They said they want to be good neighbors.

They are looking into some solutions to the problem. A company is planning to check it out in April.

Our part of town has people with heart problems, and kids run for the house in fear when the shooting starts. I am a Vietnam veteran. The sounds of war set off my PTSD. My heart races and my hands shake, especially when the semi-automatics go off.

I own guns, but I would never touch off a firearm that close to homes. A solution can’t come soon enough.
