Special education refers to tailored educational programs, services, and practices designed to meet the individual needs of students with disabilities. The goal is to provide all students, regardless of ability, with the opportunity to succeed academically and socially.

The Special Education Team continues to use the reading program “Let’s Go Learn” and “Reading Mastery” to help fill in the gaps. Students are showing growth. One of the joys of being a Special Education teacher is learning the personality of each student. Many students show affection and at times make us laugh as they can say the funniest things. High School EL

The English learners at Huron High School have recently completed the annual ACCESS testing. This is a 4-part test taken over the course of several class periods, which assesses their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. EL Emerging B students are currently reading the award-winning novel The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. It is a modern fairy tale that explores themes of courage, the power of love and forgiveness, and the opposing forces of light and darkness. EL Developing students are reading Enrique’s Journey, a nonfiction book by Sonia Nazario about a teenage boy whose mother moved from Honduras to the United States to earn money for her family. Enrique is reunited with her after his own arduous journey several years later. The book highlights the struggles faced by separated families. It also portrays joys and challenges that exist after family members are reunited.

Students in these classes will enrich their vocabulary and reflect on connections between the text and their real lives as they read and discuss these books.

8th Social Studies

The 8th Grade Social Studies team is currently ending their Unit over WWII and have begun introducing elements that would evolve in the struggles of the Cold War. The students ended the topic with a research project that they presented, where they were able to dive deeper into a specific event, battle, or person. This provided more insight into the conflict and helps the students have a better understanding of the event/person and its importance in the grand picture of the 20th century.
