Letter – Strasser 3-7-26

To the editor,

Understanding suicide holds many levels of grief. Regardless, if a suicide occurred decades ago or recently, it can be a lifelong process to achieve some form of natural acceptance that we can live with.

However, guidance outside of our own personal steps to manage our grief process may be helpful. We can support one another and our community if we first find a place within ourselves to endure the emotional pain associated with suicide.

I have completed the class and highly recommend it to others. The class was proposed by the SD Helpline Center last Fall and it was implemented through True Reflections of Huron. True Reflections also partners with other local mental health organizations. However, since some may overlap, it is their concept as founder Kelsi Stricherz commented,” to do their best to distinguish that this class is not a grief support group”. Though highly supportive of those who participate in this once-a-week practical study group for 10 weeks, held at HRMC. The free class engages in programming through textbook analysis and journaling. Professionally facilitated, it offers a range of activities, along with conversation in a confidential setting.

Most are aware that the NAMI/National Alliance on Mental Illness SD branch has recently dissolved. Attending last year’s convention in a volunteer capacity with Beadle County Survivors, I personally feel a loss of this organization. This reduces available resources for those seeking assistance with their mental health. Thankfully, the Helpline Center is ongoing and works in collaboration with programs like the one True Reflections is offering.

Please consider registering for the upcoming class on Tuesdays from noon to 1:30, starting March 31st-June 21st at the HRMC Legacy Plaza. More information will be available right here in our local newspaper!
