Heartland Classic Career Development Event held at DEX

More than 800 FFA members from 27 schools across eastern South Dakota gathered in Huron recently for the annual Heartland Classic Career Development Event (CDE) held at the DEX. Hosted by the Wolsey-Wessington FFA Chapter, the event brought students together to compete in a variety of agriculture-related contests designed to test technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and career skills.

Career Development Events are a key part of agricultural education and the FFA Organization, allowing students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world agricultural scenarios. Contests at the Heartland CDE included areas such as dairy cattle evaluation, floriculture, and other agriculture-based skill competitions. Throughout the day, students evaluated livestock, identified plants, analyzed records, and completed written examinations.

The large regional contest was made possible through the support of many community partners, including a generous sponsorship from NorthWestern Energy. Their support helped ensure the event could accommodate the large number of participating students and provide a high-quality experience for competitors and advisors alike.

With hundreds of students, advisors, and volunteers in attendance, the Heartland CDE continues to be an important regional event that highlights the role of agricultural education and the continued growth of FFA programs across South Dakota.
