Middle School Orchestra
Orchestra at the Huron Middle School has had an outstanding year! Many students from the orchestras auditioned and FIVE were selected for the South Dakota Music Education Association Middle School All State Orchestra. Congratulations to Xavier Peterson (cello), Tucker Lien (cello), Dahlia Linares (violin), December Chase (bass), and Iris Htoo (cello). The concert was held in Rapid City a few weeks ago. We were proud to represent the Huron School District.
Huron Middle School Honors Orchestra has had many great accomplishments. Honors orchestra is a smaller chamber group of 7th and 8th grade students who auditioned for a seat in the fall. We performed at Christmas at the Capitol in December and we will perform for elementary school students as well as at other community locations this spring.
Join us for our Middle School and High School Orchestra Concert on Tuesday, April 28, at the Huron High School Auditorium at 7 p.m.

High School Physical Science
This marks the third year that HHS has brought back Physical Science as part of the core Science curriculum. This class is effectively a combination of both Physics and Chemistry, in which the first semester was all Physics content. For the second semester, we have moved into the Chemistry content we’ve been building up for the past several weeks (states of matter, physical/chemical properties of materials, atomic structure, and basics of the Periodic Table). Moving into the 4th Quarter next week, we will continue exploring more patterns on the Periodic Table (metals, nonmetals, and metalloids), types of chemical bonds between atoms, and the unique conventions behind naming and writing chemical formulas.

In the general music classes, we have been learning all sorts of different things. The 6th graders have been learning about different genres of music, working in groups to create music, and giving rhythm performances for the class. The 7th graders have been learning about different music and historical events from the 1950s and 1960s. While the 8th graders have been learning the basics of guitar. 8th graders end the class by having a solo-performance of a well-known folk tune as well as a holiday jingle classic. We will also have nineteen students that go to Brookings on March 23 where they will perform with over one hundred other students at Festival for Young Voices. It has been fun getting to know the new 6th grade group and getting to know the new students signed up in 7th and 8th grade. All of the groups have been working very hard since January to put on a great concert this Spring. We are all looking forward to our concert at Huron High School on April 20 at 7 p.m.!

Washington 4-5 Orchestra
It’s hard to believe we are almost at the second concert of the year for Washington! The orchestra students are working hard to perfect their pieces for their performance on March 30th. Fourth grade will perform in parts for the first time, and fifth grade will perform two orchestra pieces. It is amazing to see how much they have progressed in 25 weeks, and to consider how much further they may go. After all, every great musician began by knowing nothing and building up their skills with time and practice. We are looking forward to sharing their progress with you and finishing out the year strong!
