Carter Nelson wins youth division of IIASD Longest Tail Feather Competition with 29-inch entry

The Independent Insurance Agents of South Dakota (IIASD) is proud to announce Carter Nelson as the Youth Category winner of its annual Longest Tail Feather Competition, earning top honors with an impressive 29-inch pheasant tail feather.
Celebrating South Dakota’s rich pheasant hunting tradition, the IIASD Longest Tail Feather Competition runs each year from October through January, inviting participants from across the state to submit their longest pheasant tail feathers for a chance at statewide recognition and cash prizes.
Carter submitted his winning feather through 1st Stop Insurance, a local independent agency, where he was recently recognized and presented with a $1,000 prize. Team members from 1st Stop Insurance gathered to congratulate Carter, marking the achievement with a check presentation in honor of his standout entry.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate Carter’s win and his participation in a tradition that means so much to South Dakota,” said Brenda Arteman, Licensed Life and Health Agent with 1st Stop Insurance. “This competition is about more than just size—it’s about community, heritage, and engaging the next generation in our state’s outdoor traditions.”
The Youth Category, open to participants ages 12–17, highlights young hunters and outdoor enthusiasts who take part in one of South Dakota’s most iconic seasonal activities. Carter’s 29-inch feather stood out among entries statewide, showcasing both luck and keen attention in the field.
IIASD continues to host the annual competition as a way to connect communities, celebrate local traditions, and support independent insurance agencies across the state.
