HURON –– Jared Beck presented Matthew Tollefson, route driver, as the May classified employee of the month. Beck noted that Tollefson’s father drove bus for more than 40 years, giving Matthew unique insight before beginning work in March of 2024 as a substitute before taking over as a full-time driver that fall.
“Punctual, friendly and dependable are all adjectives that describe Matthew,” Beck said in his presentation. “He is a model employee and is a great representative of our staff, school, and community.”
Glenda Maxted presented on the Huron Public Library’s plans for the Freedom 250 to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday. She first showed a video to explain the Freedom 250 traveling truck that the library would like to bring to Huron. However, the library’s parking lot is not able to support the truck, which is a 7,500-pound truck.
The truck is to come to the Huron Arena the week of May 4-8, and the board approved the use of the Arena parking lot.
Casey Trowbridge gave a good news report from the Madison 2-3 Center on his work with Malia Mills-DeJean as a Braillist para-educator. He was happy to announce that Malia was able to spend much more of her time in a traditional classroom this year.
Malia displayed the tablet that she uses in class in order to participate in classroom discussions. She concluded by reading a story from her tablet to the applause of those present at the meeting.
The high school student report was given by the National Honor Society. Congratulations were extended to the Huron Tigers boys’ basketball team, coaches, and student managers for winning the state championship and to Blake and Myles Ellwein for being selected to the all-tournament team.
The board also:
– Approved nine new hires.
– Accepting two resignations.
– Approved four contracts.
– Approved two grant requests, one from Madison 2-3 Center and one from school nutrition.
The board completed the public meeting and concluded the night with an executive session to prepare for contract negotiations.
