HURON –– Huron City Commissioner Rhonda Kludt explained the upcoming yard waste pickup schedule. Green yard waste bins will be picked up by the Solid Waste Department on Wednesday, April 1, 8, and 15. Beginning the week of April 20, green bins will be picked up on regular garbage and recycling pickup day.

The public is encouraged to remember that green containers are for grass clippings, flowers, and twigs, not large branches.

The commission opened the meeting by recognizing the Huron High School boys’ basketball team, who won the state Class AA championship over the weekend in Rapid City. Mayor Mark Robish joked, “We’re kind of getting used to this. Last year, we had a championship baseball team, and we just recently recognized a hockey team. We’re getting to covering all of the sports!”

He continued, “What I’m most thankful for is the respect that you showed to the public. There were times that you were down, but you were never out. You didn’t hang your head, stamp your feet, or anything like that. You did a very good job of representing your team, your school, and your community.”

The team received a round of applause from the city staff, public and the commissioners in attendance at the meeting.

A lease agreement with NB Golf LLC was approved to lease 30 new golf carts. Commissioner Rich Bragg reported that the price on the lease went up, but not exorbitantly so.

City engineer Brett Runge explained an agreement to purchase ArcGIS from ESRI and to receive training and data migration through DGR. He explained the benefit of a strong GIS system for tracking many things for the city.

Commissioners also:

Set April 4 as the public hearing date for the retail on-off sale wine and cider alcoholic beverage license for 1904 Remnant LLC, 266 Dakota Ave. S.

Approved a conditional use permit for Annette Bowen, 718 9th St. SW to operate an Airbnb/vacation rental home.

Commissioners then adjourned the public meeting to hold a work session on an urban redevelopment project for an apartment complex in the city.
