High School Library
The Huron High School Library is a busy place!  Each day, students visit the library for various reasons.  The library is a place where they can work on homework, group projects, research, do makerspace activities, play chess and checkers, participate in seasonal bookmark contests, take a minute to regroup and, of course, check out books and read!  We also have two study hall periods in the library, numerous clubs that meet in the library during homeroom, and a variety of classes that utilize the library throughout the day.  We continue to add books to our library collection and discard outdated materials.  It is a never-ending process.  We also hold a monthly book club with the public library.  Monty Benally and I facilitate the book club, and anyone is welcome to join!  If you or your student(s) would like more information on anything library related, please have them stop by the library or you can email me at [email protected].  The library is open from 7:30am-4pm each day.

Eighth Grade Field Trip
Local 8th grade students are gearing up for an exciting and educational field trip on May 4, offering a unique opportunity to explore potential career paths and post-secondary options across the region.
Students will have the chance to select from several engaging experiences, each designed to expose them to different professions and educational environments. One option includes a visit to South Dakota State University in Brookings, where students can tour campus facilities and learn more about college life.
Another group will travel to Pierre for a behind-the-scenes look at public service careers. This experience includes visits to the Huron Police Department, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and a local South Dakota National Guard unit. Students will gain insight into law enforcement, investigation work, and military service.
Additional options include a trip to Lake Area Technical College, where students can explore hands-on career and technical education programs. Another group will travel to Mitchell to visit both Dakota Wesleyan University and Mitchell Technical College, giving students a look at both traditional and technical higher education pathways.
This annual field trip is designed to help students begin thinking about their futures by connecting classroom learning to real-world opportunities. By offering a variety of experiences, the trip encourages students to explore their interests and consider the many pathways available after high school.
Huron Middle School 8th grade students and staff look forward to a meaningful and memorable day of learning beyond the classroom on May 4!

Second Grade EL
Our 2nd grade EL students wrapped up ACCESS testing in late February! The ACCESS test is an annual assessment that measures students’ English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, helping us see their growth and guide instruction. Now that testing is complete, we’re jumping back into learning with a focus on identifying and using the correct pronouns in sentences. To keep things engaging, we’re practicing with fun, hands-on activities like poke cards and sentence cover-ups—turning grammar time into game time!

Third Grade EL
Third grade EL students have had a great year working through their Language for Writing lessons and reading interventions. Language for Writing is a comprehensive oral language and writing program. The direct instruction approach explicitly teaches important speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Most EL students receive services every day for thirty to sixty minutes in small groups of four to ten students at a time. We started the year learning about synonyms, opposites, complete sentences, and different types of sentences. Currently, students are learning about the differences between general and specific topics, working with analogies, and using commas and quotation marks. Students are also practicing identifying the subjects and predicates in statements, questions, and commands. In each lesson, students write sentences about what is happening in pictures provided. The students are on their way to a strong finish to their third-grade year!
