Potter’s Shoes receives Mayor Award of Excellence

Editor’s note: the annual Huron award celebration was held Thursday, April 2. Information on the other awards given on the evening will be in Wednesday’s paper.

HURON –– Potter’s Shoes current building on Third and Dakota was originally built in 1889 to house Huron’s first City Hall (which included a place for the two Fire Department horses in the back). Initially, Potter’s store was located across from Manolis Grocery on Third Street in a group of buildings owned by Ella Osborn. In 1956, City Hall came up for sale, and was bought by Keith Potter. So, for 85 years, it has been a cornerstone of our downtown community that embodies the spirit of the Mayor’s Award for Excellence. This award, sponsored by the Greater Huron Development Corporation, recognizes business that make longstanding contributions to the city’s economic development and community well-being.

Owners Susan and Bush Fullerton have sustained Potter’s reputation for excellence that was built for decades prior by Susan’s grandparents Keith and Helen Potter and her parents Pat (Potter) and Tom Landstrom. Unlike large scale retailers, they provide a level of personal care that improves the ‘human condition’ for Huron folks. Customers cite their exceptional knowledge, service and abilities. They, and their staff, are people who know the engineering of a shoe and the anatomy of the feet that go in them. In the Footwear Industry, that’s what’s known as being a “SHOEDOG”!

The store caters to the needs of many by stocking a solid selection for the entire family. Units ranging from athletic & hiking gear to safety boots & shoes for the local workforce, including farm, factory, occupational, and construction, plus good quality styles for dress and street casual. The support for our local workforce directly aligns with the economic development goals of this Mayor’s Award for Excellence.

By participating in community-wide events, including Crazy Days and Small Business Saturday, Potter’s Shoes helps maintain a vibrant, active downtown that attracts visitors and supports Huron’s economy.

Their loyalty to Huron and dedication to maintaining the charm of a local small business makes Potter’s an ideal candidate for this prestigious honor.

I grew up getting my shoes at Potter’s. They always had what I was looking for and a perfect fit. Susan, Bush and the staff are fantastic!

As a former Huronian I remember well the Potter shoe store and its owners through the years. Patty was a classmate and at times her mother filled in as a substitute teacher. A fine Huron family.
