City recognizes Cornerstones Career Learning Center

HURON –– During public forum time at Monday’s meeting, Mayor Mark Robish read a proclamation recognizing Cornerstones Career Learning Center’s 40 years of business, beginning in Huron. April 6 was declared as Cornerstones Career Learning Center 40th Anniversary Day in Huron in the proclamation.

Cornerstones assistant director Becki Lemke was on hand to receive the proclamation. Beginning in Huron, Cornerstones now also has locations in Aberdeen, Mitchell, Vermillion, and Yankton. Cornerstones offers many services, from GED test preparation, English language instruction, job development services, and skill-building programs for adults.

Also during public forum, Commissioner Bryan Smith mentioned the upcoming dodgeball tournament, hosted by Community Counseling Services at the Nordby Exhibit Hall on Saturday, May 2, at 10 a.m. Teams are needed in both youth and adult categories. Those who are interested should contact CCS at 605-352-8596 for more information.

A public hearing was held for the retail on-off sale wine and cider alcoholic beverage license application submitted by 1904 Remnant, LLC, 266 Dakota Ave. S. With no objections, this was approved.

Parks and recreation director Chad Schroder presented a use agreement for Pepsi Soccer Fields with the Brookings Futbol Club. The use agreement will be presented before beginning the spring and summer soccer programs under the Brookings Futbol Club umbrella, taking over for the Huron Soccer Association.

Commissioners also:

– Accepted the voluntary resignation of Rhonda Yates, part-time year-round library clerk, effective April 8, and authorized advertising to fill the vacancy.

– Approved the 2026 seasonal employment for staff in golf maintenance, Broadland Creek pro shop, and parks and recreation maintenance.

– Approved a raffle permit submitted by Beadle County Sportsmen’s Club for a drawing to be held April 25.

– Approved a change in travel reimbursement rate.

– Approved the special on-sale alcoholic beverage license submitted by Fire Pit Pizza for a summer kick off event to be held May 30 from noon until midnight at The Juice Box, 1502 Dakota Ave. S.

The commission ended the regular meeting and held a work session regarding potential per-machine fees for video lottery machines. They then adjourned into an executive session to conclude the meeting.
