HURON –– The South Dakota Area IV Community and Family Extension Leader (CFEL) held their Area IV /Spring Council meeting on Saturday, April 11, at the Huron Senior Center. Deanne Ness was in charge of the registration. Diana Barton and Deanne Ness were in charge of the Cultural Arts Exhibits.
Diana Baron, Beadle County President gave the greetings from Beadle County CFEL. Area IV President, Dianne Perry, introduced Lynette Culver, State CFEL President, Linda Volmer, State Parliamentarian, Deanne Ness, State Membership/Marketing Chairman, and Alison Dennis, Area IV Director.
Beadle County Presidents, are Deanne Ness, (Busy Fingers), Alison Dennis (Country Neighbors) and Lorene Cavigelli, (BCNU).
Dianne Perry called the meeting to order, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, South Dakota State Pledge, CFEL Creed and Mission Statement led by Maggie Cameron, Beadle County Vice President. Dianne Perry and Julie Boomsma led the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner and the State CFEL Song.

Julie Boomsma read the minutes from the 2025 Area meeting and they were approved as read. Alison Dennis read the Issue Reports submitted by the club presidents, explaining what their clubs had done throughout the year. Deanne Ness gave the Beadle County Treasure report.
State President, Lynette Culver gave the President’s Report and answered any questions from the members. Leadership and Susan Wilder Donations were sent to the State Treasure.
During the breaks, members were able to view the Cultural Arts exhibits, and bid on the silent auction items.
Alison Dennis recognized members Julie Boomsma for 52 years, Pat Jones for 45 years, Alison Dennis for 40 years, and Kathy Meyer for 45 years of membership for CFEL Alison Dennis also recognized Esther Gilchrist who passed away this year at a memorial service.

Beekeeper, Jim Ogren from Spirit Lake gave an Issue Program, “A Year in the Life of a Bee-Keeper”. He explained what he did with the bees on his farm, how to take care of them, and how he got honey. He had several of his tools that he used, and answered questions from members.
A noon meal was catered by Doug Stevens, chef at the Senior Center. After the meal, Dianne Perry and Julie Boomsma again led the group in singing “The Bees Go Buzzing” and “Honeycomb”.
Deanne Ness announced that Diana Barton was the winner of the $50 scholarship to help her expenses for the State Convention. Dianne Perry will be the alternate.
Deanne Ness reported that 12 members, along with two guests and one speaker attended the meeting for the day.
Diana Barton announced that the Cultural Arts exhibits will advance to the State Convention, and that Theresa Horn won the People’s Choice award for her Christmas Ladder Arrangement. Julie Boomsma gave the results of the Silent Auction. Theresa Horn was in charge of the door prizes.

Deanne gave a report on the upcoming State Convention that will be held in Mitchell, September 18-19. “Oh the Things You Will Learn in CFEL” will be the theme for the day. It will be held at the River Tree Church Fellowship Hall. The Issues that will be presented at the convention will be, “That Chirping You Hear May Not be a Cricket!” by the Mitchell Fire Dept., and “Fraud, Scams and AI” presented by the South Dakota AARP.
The Beadle County Fall Council meeting will be Wednesday, September 9, at the Senior Center with registration beginning at 5:30 p.m., and meeting at 6 p.m.
