School Notes 4-18-26

Huron High School Special Ed

Students at Huron High School are building important academic and life skills through engaging, real-world learning experiences in both freshman and transition-level classes.

Freshman English students are reading the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. As they work through the text, students are focusing on key literary elements such as character development, plot, and theme. Through guided discussions and classroom activities, they are gaining a deeper understanding of how stories are structured and how they connect to real-life ideas.

Freshman math students are working on a variety of topics tailored to their individual skill levels. This personalized approach allows students to strengthen foundational math skills while building confidence and independence in their learning.

Freshman study skills classes are helping students develop strategies for success across all subjects. Lessons have focused on identifying individual learning styles, practicing effective study habits, and improving the ability to stay on task—skills that are essential for both academic and personal growth.

In the Transition to Adulthood program, students are applying what they’ve learned through meaningful final projects that prepare them for life beyond high school.

Workplace class students are completing a Personal Career Project, where they explore careers of interest, research job responsibilities, and learn about the steps needed to reach their goals.

In the Home Life class, students are designing their first apartment, learning how to budget for rent, utilities, furniture, and other essential living expenses. This hands-on project helps students understand the responsibilities of independent living.

Through these engaging classes and projects, students at Huron High School are gaining the academic knowledge and practical skills needed for success in school and in life.

I teach a variety of math courses spanning life and occupational math to algebra. In my Occupational Math Class, we have been discussing the topic of money and how we handle our money impacts our lives. This class has also been working on real life math in at home situations and bargain math to help save money as well. My Integrated Math classes have students working on math at their own individualized level. From foundational skills to Algebra 1 and beyond. The student’s pre-test, work on lessons and then take knowledge checks/quizzes and tests along the way to show mastery of concepts.

Madison 2-3 Center Music

It has been a great year in music at Madison School. In the month of April, we are learning about treble clef notes and singing with solfege. Solfege is a way of learning to sight sing using short syllables for each note. Ex. Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do. We watch a clip of the song “Do, Re, Mi” from “The Sound of Music” and learn the song. That is always a hit! In May, we will be learning about musical theater and then watching a musical and learning a few songs from the show. Third grade studies “Mary Poppins” and second grade studies the 1999 film of “Annie”.
