HURON — Rick Button of Huron was inducted into the South Dakota Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America’s Hall of Fame during the 42nd Annual South Dakota Golf Superintendents Conference and Trade Show, which was held in Sioux Falls.
Button was a past president of the organization and served 22 years as secretary/treasurer. He was also awarded the association’s Professional Service Award in 2001, Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, and Distinguished Service Award in 2012.
Button started his career at the Chamberlain Country Club in 1978, before returning to Huron in 1981 to work for Merv Bouchie at the Meadowbrook and Memorial Golf Course.
Button and his assistant, Mike Tisland, were responsible for the grass grow-in period at Broadland Creek Golf Course when it was built.
During Button’s tenure at the city-owned courses, Memorial Golf Course suffered through two devastating floods, and Klock Field was constructed, forcing renovations to Memorial Golf Course and a grow-in year.
Since retiring from the city courses, Button stayed involved with the occupation through his own golf course aerification and consulting service, called Greener Links. He also does some local yard maintenance and assists on a relative’s farm.
