To the editor,
Senator Mike Rounds voted to pass H.J. Res. 140, which overturned mineral withdrawal protection for 225,000 acres of pristine natural beauty in and near the Boundary Waters of Minnesota. It opens up this area to copper-sulfide mining and clears the path for Twin Metals Minnesota to pursue mining that has a one-hundred percent track record of polluting surrounding water resources. I thought our senator would be a better neighbor to the people of Minnesota.
Twin Metals Minnesota is a subsidiary of Antofagasta, located in Chile, a company that has ties to the Trump family. The copper to be mined will be sold to China.
Who benefits from Senator Rounds’ vote? The people of Minnesota and all who appreciate nature’s beauty and benefits will not. Big money, politics, and China will. Just once, what’s left of our beautiful planet should come first.
Dr. Seuss had it right when he said the following: “Unless someone like you (Senator Rounds) cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
I am disappointed with Senator Rounds, who represents political allies and big money more than the people without big money who love and respect our beautiful outdoor spaces, such as the Boundary Waters.
