Beth Joan Walker was the third of five children born to Henry and Anna (Fosheim) Walker on August 20, 1932, at Sansarc. She began her education at Sansarc’s one-room schoolhouse. The family moved to Bryant in 1941, where Beth finished her education, graduating in 1950 from Bryant High School. She graduated from Huron College with her teacher’s degree.

In 1952, Beth was united in marriage to Tellef Carter. They moved to Everett, Wash., and had five children before moving back to South Dakota in 1975.

Beth worked in various fields before retiring, first as a teacher in Midland and Lake Preston, then as an owner of a small café. She served as a nurse’s aide at Parkview Care Center in Bryant, then in 1979 went back to school, earned a degree and worked as a dental lab technician.

Beth loved music and was a pianist and sang in the church choir. She loved raising flowers and growing and canning vegetables from her garden. Perhaps her greatest talent was as a seamstress. She sewed clothing for her family and costumes for Halloween and the country’s Bicentennial. Once her children were raised, Beth used her sewing talent to create beautifully pieced quilts that are now treasures for her children and grandchildren.
