HURON –– The Huron City Commission on Monday evening approved a quote from KLM Engineering for three mixers for the city’s water towers. City engineer Brett Runge explained that while the water department does a good job of keeping water levels variable to avoid freezing over or stagnation, the mixers can protect from any potential freezing that could result in damage to the towers.
The mixers were approved at a cost of $85,430.40.
The meeting opened with two variance requests as the commission convened as the board of adjustment. The commission approved a variance request filed by Scott Campbell and Brittany Wipf to construct a six-foot fence at their property at 980 Saxton Dr. Due to sight concerns for traffic, this was approved with the condition that the fence include slats for viewing for driver safety.
The second variance request was filed by Joshua Groenewald for 250 4th St. NE to operate a fabrication business. This was approved with condition that no manufacturing be done on site, only assembly and finishing of products.
In public forum, Commissioner Rhonda Kludt reminded residents of a Mother’s Day brunch set for Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Huron Senior Center. Finance director Paullyn Carey let the public know absentee ballots for the June 2 city, school, county, and primary election are now available at the Beadle County Auditor’s office on the second floor of the courthouse.
Human resources generalist Shannon Bintliff shared a presentation on the city’s participation at a recent business and career fair hosted by the Huron High School Career and Technical Education department.
The commission approved applying for a Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant for new playground equipment at Bob Bushman Park. Parks and Recreation Director Chad Shroder explained that if the city’s request is approved, the equipment will be purchased in teh 2027 budget period.
City engineer Brett Runge explained three railroad pipeline licenses for City of Huron utility lines under the railroad tracks currently owned by the State of South Dakota. These lines are existing lines, but no existing licenses could be found, so the license fee was waived by the state in establishing these licenses in the case of potentual future sale of the property.
Commissioners also:
– Accepted the voluntary resignations of volunteer firefighters Chad Crandall and Ben Sharon.
– Acknowledged that volunteer firefighters Christina Guthrie and Travis Wipf have completed their required probationary periods.
– Set May 11 as the public hearing date to consider the transfer of a retail on-off sale wine and cider license and a retail on-off sale malt beverage and South Dakota farm wine license from Tokyo Huron LLC to Koi Dining Group LLC.
– Approved the second reading of ordinance No. 2283-23-420 regarding vacation rentals.
The commission ended the public portion of the meeting and convened in an executive session.
