HURON — The first of 13 race nights slated for the 2026 season at Dakota State Fair Speedway is Saturday.

It is the first time the speedway has hosted a full slate of summer racing programs since 2017.

Taking over as the new promoters at the Huron track this season are brothers Jordan and Josh Sterrett. Both have been around the racing scene for numerous years and stepped up to take over the track, once it was determined that long-time DSFS promoter Orville Chenoweth wasn’t going to continue in that capacity.

Drivers are excited for a return of full-time racing at DSFS and hope the fans will come out to support the effort being put forth by the Huron natives to continue the strong racing tradition in the community.

“It’s pretty exciting, I think it’s a good deal,” said late model driver Cole Searing of Huron, who is a second generation driver at the Huron track. “I’ve got a good open mind about what’s going on with the new promoters.

“I just hope everything goes good,” he said. “I hope the town supports it and other businesses, hopefully support it with some sponsorship stuff.”

Also looking forward to a full-time racing program as DSFS this season is Adam Brotherton of Huron, who is one of two drivers to ink a victory during the most recent event at the speedway on June 7, 2025.

“I’m just grateful for Josh and Jordan stepping up and being the people that take over here,” Brotherton said. “It’s going to be new and they’re new and everything’s new to them and everybody else, but it’s exciting just to have races back in town, honestly, more than anything.”

The only other driver to win at the Huron oval in 2025 was Chad Becker of Aberdeen, who claimed the Tri-State Late Model Series victory during the second of two race at the track held in conjunction with Wheel Jam on the South Dakota State Fairgrounds. It was his 26th career win at DSFS.

Searing also has 26 career wins at his hometown track and will be looking to add to that total in 2026.

“We’re just kind of bouncing around. We’ll do some WISSOTA Challenge Series stuff and some Tri-State stuff, and then when we’re not out doing that we’ll run here,” said Searing, who’s late victory at DSFS was Aug. 19, 2023. “So I think a fair amount of them we should be here, but there will be a few we won’t be able to attend.”

The late models will be one of the four WISSOTA classes that will run at DSFS on a weekly basis throughout the 2026 season. They will be joined by the street stocks, Midwest modifieds and super stocks.

After taking a year off to start his own business, Brotherton returned to racing in 2025 with a move up to the WISSOTA modified division after spending numerous years in a Midwest modified.

However, he also continued to race in the Midwest modified division.

“We still have our B-mod, so we’ll be racing in town with that,” said Brotherton, who has 14 career wins at DSFS. “The B-mod is just like it was last year, but it’s ready to race.”

Claiming the most recent win at the Huron track in the WISSOTA street stock division was Maria Broksieck of Goodwin. She earned the thrid win of her career at DSFS on Aug. 17, 2024.

The most recent WISSOTA super stock victory at DSFS occurred on the same night and belongs Trevor Nelson of Warner. He has six feature wins in his career at the Huron oval.

Searing is also looking forward to the atmosphere, which is provided each race night at the Huron track.

“The city and the people in town usually support it really well, so it’s a really good atmosphere,” he said. “The fans in the stands always come down and hang out afterwards. There’s not too many tracks left like that, so I’m looking forward to having that back.”

Racing is scheduled to begin each race night at 7 p.m., with the grandstands opening at 6 p.m. Following the season opener, regular racing programs will be held May 16, May 23 and May 30 at DSFS.

The first special event of the season is slated for June 4, when the Tri-State Late Model Series visits the track for the first of two events to be held in conjunction with Wheel Jam. The Tri-State Late Model Series will return to DSFS on June 6 for a $4,000-to-win event.

The late models will be joined both nights by the WISSOTA street socs and Midwest modifieds.

Regular race nights are slated for June 13 and June 20, before the MSTS Outlaw Springs come to Huron on June 27. The 410 sprint cars will be joined by the WISSOTA street stocks and Midwest modifieds.

Regular race nights will be held July 4, July 18 and Aug. 8, before the season closes with the championships on Aug. 15.
