HURON –– During a brief meeting Monday evening, the Huron School Board heard of multiple educators and staff members nominated for local and statewide awards.
First, during the time to celebrate successes in the district, Krissa Korkow, a teacher at Buchanan K-1 Center, was recognized for winning the South Dakota Region 3 teacher of the year. This makes her a finalist for the SD teacher of the year award.
During his superintendent’s report, Dr. Kraig Steinhoff mentioned that finalists for district awards were announced Monday, with the winners to be recognized at the May 11 board meeting.
Finalists for teacher of the year are:
McKinley/Buchanan K-1 Center – Robin Axtmann, Abby Johnson, April Koch.
Madison 2-3 Center – Kristie Christensen, Dani Lowe, Alexis Scott.
Washington 4-5 Center – Michelle Azar, Nicholle Mudge, Todd Preston.
Middle School – Courtney Clarke, Claire Gilbert, Tyler VanWyhe.
High School – Brandi Fitzgerald, James Stueckrath, Clayton Wahlstrom.
Finalists for the professional support staff award are Sarah Blue, Lori Eggleston, Tisha Harvey, Juliana Janssen, Tammy Luce and Dawn Marshall.
Finalists for the classified employee of the year are Tasha Kjellerson, Jamie Kleinsasser, Lona Moser, Malainy Perez, Danielle Radke, Lilly Rameriz, Cassie Reinhardt and Matthew Tollefson.
Mylie Byrd gave a presentation to the board about the school newspaper, explaining that the paper is working on the senior edition.
The board also:
Approved eight new hires.
Approved seven resignations.
Approved two contracts.
Approved two open enrollment requests.
Approved two grant funding requests.
Approved the use of a Huron School bus by the Huron Parks and Recreation Department during summer programs.
The board adjourned from the public meeting and entered an executive session regarding contract negotiations. No action was taken following the session.
