This week, the South Dakota Newsmedia Association (SDNA) held its annual convention in Deadwood. If you aren’t familiar with the SDNA, you should know they played a role in helping this newspaper reopen last year.
They are the trade association for South Dakota’s newspapers, and they have been around for more than 140 years. SDNA’s executive director, Dave Bordewyk, not only meets with government representatives on our behalf, but also helps us navigate the waters of newspaper publishing in general.
While the association itself serves as a support for promoting our papers and protecting our rights, it’s the community of its members that makes it so significant. Our ability to provide relevant and timely statewide coverage comes from our web of members working together in areas like the capital, where we don’t have staff.
This week, many of its members congregated to share stories, both successes and struggles, to support each other, and to remind us of why we do what we do.
In September, I lost a mentor and a close friend, who was my primary resource in South Dakota. This week, I gained a handful of additional local resources who care about South Dakota just as much as we do here at The Plainsman. We may often compete for advertising or subscribers, and we may not always see things in the same light, but we really are like family.
