Letter – Kattner 5-6-26

To the editor:

National Music Week is May 3-10 and is being celebrated by the National Federation of Music Clubs, with the theme, “Music … is our constant companion.” With this week upon us, I couldn’t think of anything more deserving of its own celebration than music and this year’s theme beautifully captures the countless ways music touches our lives.

As Miss South Dakota, I’ve had the incredible honor of traveling across our state, connecting with communities not only through the Miss America Opportunity, but more importantly through music. My community service initiative, Music’s Power to Inspire, was born from that very belief—to uplift and connect others through song.

This year, I’ve witnessed firsthand how music becomes a companion, especially for those who may feel alone. Through visits to nursing homes and assisted living centers, I’ve had the privilege of sharing music as a source of comfort, joy, and connection. In those moments, music becomes more than sound—it becomes presence.

Equating music with companionship isn’t something I had fully considered before, but it’s undeniable. Music energizes our crowds, reflects our cultures, centers us on long drives, and helps us say the words we sometimes can’t. It has always been there for us—whether we realize it or not.

My grandmother, Barbara Valer, understood this deeply. She believed in the power of music to bring people together and spent years leading and celebrating this very week. Her passion created a legacy that continues to inspire me. This National Music Week, I honor not only the constant companion that music has been in my life, but also my incredible grandmother who showed me just how powerful it can be.
