School Notes 5-6-26

High School English Language Arts

Students in two communication-focused courses are gaining confidence and insight into how ideas are shared, both on a personal level and across society.

In the Speech class, students have been learning and applying an eight-step process for preparing effective speeches. From selecting and researching topics to organizing content and practicing delivery, the structured approach has helped students build a strong foundation in public speaking. Recently, they presented their speeches to classmates, covering a wide range of topics that reflect their interests and perspectives. What might have started as a nerve-wracking experience has quickly turned into a supportive environment, with students embracing the opportunity to speak in front of their peers.

Meanwhile, students in the Speaking Out class are exploring the broader landscape of human communication. Their studies focus on how people convey meaning through both verbal and nonverbal language, examining everything from tone of voice to body language. In addition, the class explores mass communication and helps students understand how messages are created and shared through media and how those messages influence audiences.

Together, these courses are equipping students with practical skills, preparing them to communicate effectively in both everyday interactions and larger public contexts.

As a former English/speech teacher, I appreciate reading about the format being used. Students must understand they have to have an organized plan before executing the subject matter to be discussed. Otherwise writings become a series of bits and pieces without examples of support.
