Letter – Smith 5-9-26

To the editor:

National Music Week is May 3-10 and is being celebrated by the National Federation of Music Clubs, with the theme, “Music … is our constant companion.”

Music has played a key role in shaping who I am today. I remember picking up the guitar for the first time with Barb Valer, who was my awesome guitar teacher, and the feeling that it gave me. From that point on, I knew that music had an important role in my life.

Whether or not we’ve realized it, music shapes every one of us in one way or another. Music shapes our memories, fills the quiet time, and gives rhythm to both the ordinary and extraordinary seasons of life.

For some, music becomes a profession, and for others it does not. But for all of us, its constant presence is just as meaningful. I didn’t pursue a career in music, but that hasn’t lessened its role in my life. It marks celebrations, early mornings, and late nights. I still find picking up a guitar to be just as powerful as it was at my very first lesson.
