HURON – During public forum at Monday evening’s Huron City Commission meeting, Commissioner Bryan Smith let the public know that Fourth Street between Dakota Ave. S. and Illinois Ave. SW will be closed for water main work beginning on Thursday, May 14, through mid-June. While portions of the road may open sooner, the public is encouraged to plan an alternate route during the work time.

Rob Rieger, Superintendent of the Water and Sewer Department, presented three items to the commission. He encouraged the public to move sump pumps out of the sanitary sewer to the street. He also announced that his department will be flushing fire hydrants in the southeast portion of town, east of Dakota Ave. and south of Third St., starting next week.

Finally, Rieger announced that the City of Huron was recognized by the state Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) with a Drinking Water Certificate of Achievement Award, the 25th consecutive year that Huron has been recognized.

“Safe and dependable drinking water plays an important role in protecting public health and supporting economic growth,” DANR Secretary Hunter Roberts said in a release. “This recognition highlights the hard work of our drinking water professionals across South Dakota who keep these systems running every day.”

The commission approved the transfer of retail on-off sale malt beverage and South Dakota farm wine and retail on-off wine and cider alcohol beverage licenses from Tokyo Huron LLC to Koi Dining Group doing business as Tokyo Sushi & Hibachi. Finance director Paullyn Carey explained that there were no complaints and all inspections were passed.

Police Chief Derek Layher introduced a request to transfer an MRAP armored vehicle to Ft Riley, Kansas, at a cost of $2,650. This was approved.

Layher also presented a police services agreement with JSX Promotions to provide a uniformed officer at racing events at Dakota State Fair Speedway. This was approved.

The commission also:

– Acknowledged Colton Clemens completed his probationary period, making him eligible for supplemental benefits, and reclassified to Water-Sewer Treatment 1.

– Approved the employment of Chase Remington for the part-time year-round library clerk position.

– Approved 2026 seasonal employment for staff at Broadland Pro Shop, Parks and Recreation, and Splash Central Waterpark.

– Set the public hearing for transfer of retail on-off sale malt beverage and South Dakota farm wine license from The Taphouse LLC doing business as The Vault to The Vault Taphouse Wine and Eatery LLC for June 1.

Commissioner Rhonda Kludt read the Solid Waste Department upcoming holiday schedule for Memorial Day. The department will be closed on Saturday, May 23, through Monday, May 25, for the holiday.

Monday’s garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection that week will be done on Wednesday, May 27. Residents are encouraged to put their bins out the night before, as trucks will not be rerouted.
