HURON –– The upcoming primary election was the focus of discussion for the Beadle County Commission at Tuesday morning’s meeting. After quite a bit of discussion, the commission set Wednesday, June 10, as the date to conduct the post-election audit of the primary election.
The primary election is set for June 2, and auditor Jill Hanson led discussion regarding possible outcomes depending on the percentage received by the top vote-getter in the gubernatorial election. Runoff elections could be triggered if the top vote-getter does not receive 35 percent of the votes cast.
The commission will conduct a canvass of the election on Thursday, June 4, beginning at 9 a.m. At that point, the commission will make an appointment to fill the District 3 seat for the remainder of the term.
The commission approved the listing of a position in the register of deeds office after a staff resignation. A hire for the janitorial position was discussed and an offer will be made.
Highway superintendent Jason Fritzsche informed the commission that the RAIF program for towns and townships has been extended and further funded through Senate Bill 240, with $5 million dedicated to the program statewide. The amount of funds allocated to Beadle County is yet to be determined at this time.
The commission met for an extended time with the states attorney regarding contract negotiations.
The next county commission meeting is set for Tuesday, May 26, at 9 a.m., in the commission room on the second floor of the county courthouse.
