Buchanan K-1 Physical Education
Our youngest tigers have had a great year in Physical Education at Buchanan. We began the year “Building a Foundation,” by learning locomotor movements, rules, procedures, and safety in the gym. A major component of our foundation was personal and general space, which we work on daily.
After building our foundation we moved on to a unit on manipulatives, which included exploration with bean bags, scarves and hula hoops. From here, we completed units on catching/throwing, jumping, kicking/trapping and dribbling/volleying/striking. Our students had the opportunity to participate in the Kids Heart Challenge through the American Heart Association in November. We were able to raise over $4000 for the American heart association and learned about the importance of helping others.
We are finishing the school year by learning to ride Strider Bicycles and will be having our traditional field day in May.
The students continue to bring excitement and energy to class every day. We strive to work hard, while being respectful and supportive of each other. Hopefully everyone has a great summer and is able to find ways to stay active!

High School FACS
Family and Consumer Science classes teach the life skills that all students need when they leave the K-12 education system and become independent adults. There were seven different FACS classes offered this school year, and each class gives Huron Tiger students the knowledge to be safe, healthy, and successful on their own!
It is amazing to see how confident a student is after connecting real-life situations to knowledge learned through hands-on and project-based learning. Realistically, every skill and standard taught could, and most likely will, be in their future.
Skills like learning to check the proper internal temperature of chicken, understanding prenatal development of a baby, or designing a functional and safe space to live in. Not all students have the opportunity to be taught some of these skills at home, so FACS classes are vital for a majority of our students.
Over eighty students were able to pass the ServSafe Food Handlers certification, giving them an edge in the food industry workforce. Over twenty students were able to take home “robot infant babies” to experience the first-hand joys (and hardships) of caring for a newborn for thirty-six hours straight. These are only two examples of the real-life experiences that FACS courses bring to the youth in Huron.
FACS classes allow students a break from the standard academic load to learn about life.

High School Career Exploration
Career Exploration is a fairly new class that has been offered at Huron High School over the past couple of years. The course gives students the opportunity not only to explore different career clusters, but also to learn more about themselves and discover careers that may be a good fit for their interests and goals.
Students begin the course by completing multiple career interest surveys and researching careers that align with their results. After exploring a variety of occupations, they broaden their scope by learning about all of the career clusters and how they connect and work together in different ways.
From there, students choose one or two careers to study more deeply so they can determine whether those careers fit the lifestyle and interests they see for themselves in the future. This process leads to students creating a plan for what they can be doing now during high school, what steps they may need to take after graduation, and what obstacles they may encounter along the way.
At the end of the semester, students have the opportunity to participate in a job shadow experience at a local business. This past year, students were placed at more than 21 local businesses. These experiences help students decide not only if they can see themselves pursuing a certain career, but also if a particular path may not be the right fit for them.
Thank you to the Huron community for welcoming our students and providing these valuable learning experiences. We truly appreciate your support and willingness to invest in our students’ futures!
