To the editor:
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Obviously Dusty has been away from South Dakota so long he doesn’t remember the governor cannot raise taxes. Rhoden did not sign tax increases but gave people options to decide what is best for their counties and cities. The same is true of the brand board bill. It merely gives the LOCAL board the option to increase fees if need be to cover the cost of the program.
SB 96 is just a tool offered to counties to raise a half penny sales tax if THEY CHOOSE; and if the voters want, they can refer such action to a vote. The one penny increase is another option for cities to add a temporary tax for a special project until it is completed. if voters in the city are opposed to that action, they can refer it to a vote.
We need good schools, roads, fire protection, rural water. The funding of these services are made on the LOCAL LEVEL by the LOCAL elected officials. South Dakotans like to have decisions made locally as much as possible. I can’t imagine the struggles all entities of government will have this construction season just due to increased costs because of oil prices and many of them may feel they will have to implement a sales tax. Those are LOCAL DECISIONS, not the Governor’s. We like Government By the People in South Dakota. I guess Dusty has been absent from South Dakota for so long, he has forgotten that.
I commend Governor Rhoden and the 2026 Legislature for providing another option to municipalities and county governments so IF NEEDED, they can implement a sales tax.
REMEMBER IT IS IF NEEDED. Dusty, please stop lying, You know better.
