City Commission hears of upcoming homeless meeting

HURON – As part of a brief meeting Monday evening, the Huron City Commission heard from Ron Volesky during public forum about an upcoming meeting for a public group gathering information about homeless in Huron to gauge the potential need for a homeless shelter in town. The next meeting of the group will be Saturday, June 13, at 11 a.m., at the Salvation Army chapel.

The commission approved the first pay request for milling and overlay on the year to Asphalt Paving & Materials for $1,116,286.

The commission heard a recommendation from the public safety committee to add two streetlights to Dogleg Court. This was approved.

Huron Police Chief Derek Layher presented a request to surplus a lightbar with siren and a control head to donate to the Cavour Fire Department. This was approved.

Commissioners also:

– Recognized that Braxtyn Mendel, water-sewer treatment uncertified, completed his probationary period.

– Accepted the voluntary retirement of Solid Waste Superintendent Dale Fortin, effective Jan. 22, 2027. Dale was recognized for more than 28 years of service to the city.

– Approved the employment of Andrew Hansen as the Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent, effective June 1.

– Approved the seasonal employment of Damon Schmidt as an engineering intern.

– Approved a parade permit for Antique Power Association for June 19, from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

The solid waste department is closed from Saturday, May 23, through Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

The Monday garbage, recycling and grass collection will be done Wednesday, May 27. Residents are encouraged to have containers out the night before as trucks will not be rerouted.

City offices will also be closed Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day, and there is no city commission meeting that evening.
