SIOUX FALLS — Three area girls won titles during the opening two days of the Class B State Track and Field Meet on Thursday and Friday.
Liz Boschee used a throw of 147 feet, 7 inches to win the state title in the javelin. She was also second in the high jump at 5-5and qualified for the finals by finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 100- and 300-meter hurdle events.
Hazel Luethmers of De Smet claimed the high jump state title, clearing 5-6.5 to edge Boschee. Ciera Mickelson of Sunshine Bible Academy was fifth at 5-0.
Hadlee Holt of Iroquois/Lake Preston turned in a throw of 139-7 to win the state title in the discus. Ivey Schoenfelder of De Smet was third at 115-2, while teammate Audi Currier was fourth at 113-4.
Kendal Uttecht was third in the 800 for Wolsey-Wessington at 2:18.07, while Kenzie Kolousek of Wessington Springs was fifth at 2:18.75.
Kolousek also qualified for the finals in the 400 using a time of 58.80 seconds to finish fourth in the prelims.
Hadasah Olson of James Valley Christian was fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:41.42.
Wolsey-Wessington finished third in the medley relay with a time of 4:18.36. Members of the team were Danika Peterson, Shae Uttecht, Abby Huntsinger and Kendal Uttecht.
Sunshine Bible Academy and De Smet qualified for the finals in the girls’ 800 relay by finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, in the prelims. Dakota Boersma, Daraby Boersma, Ciera Mickelson and Tessa Hinman combined for a time of 1:49.30 for SBA. Gemma Luethmers, Hazel Luethmers, Charli McCune and Adalyn Gross combined for a time of 1:49.34 for De Smet.
With nine of the 20 events scored through the first two days, Ipswich led the Class B girls’ standings with 35 points. Northwestern was second at 30, followed by St. Mary’s at 28, Deubrook Area at 26 and De Smet at 21.
Sanborn Central/Woonsocket was eighth at 18, while Wolsey-Wessington was 11th at 12.
Rogan Albrecht of De Smet qualified for the finals in three events. He was sixth in the 100 prelims at 11.08, sixth in the 200 prelims at 22.87 and seventh in the 400 prelims at 51.76.
Logan LaBrie of Hitchcock-Tulare was second in the 100 prelims at 10.90 and fourth in the 200 prelims at 22.36.
Also making the finals in the 400 was Owen Anderson of De Smet, who was eighth at 51.84. He also qualified for the finals in the 110 hurdles by finishing eighth in the prelims at 16.36.
Grant Wilkinson of De Smet placed in both the shot put and discus. He was sixth in the shot put at 49-3.5 and eighth in the discus at 138-2.
James Valley Christian’s Kaden Ober was fourth in the 3,200 at 9:52.96.
Logan Mebius of Wessington Springs was fifth in the 800 at 1:59.72.
Using a jump of 6-0, Carson Finn of Wessington Springs shared the fifth spot in the high jump, while Gavin Waldner of JVC was sixth in the long jump at 20-4.
Wessington Springs and James Valley Christian were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 3,200 relay. Max Mebius, Finn, Logan Mebius and Sutten Jensen combined for a 8:30.55 for Wessington Springs, while Levi Crandall, Kolby VanDerWerff, Keegan Loewen and Ober clocked in at 8:38.54 for JVC.
JVC was also eighth in the medley relay. Gavin Waldner, Loewen, Isaac Wipf and Ober turned in a 3:45.61.
Philip held the top spot in the Class B boys’ standings after the first two days with 42 points. Bennett County was second at 31, followed by Mitchell Christian at 26, Irene-Wakonda at 22 and Faulkton Area at 21.
Wessington Springs was 11th at 11.5, while James Valley Christian shared the 12th spot with 11.
The final day of competition will be today, starting at 9 a.m.
