14U takes fourth in Brandon
BRANDON – The Huron Tigers 14U team put itself into the championship bracket coming out of pool play, but dropped two games in the championship round to finish fourth over the weekend at the Sunshine Foods Silver Slugger Tournament in Brandon.
The Tigers opened the tourney with a victory over host Brandon Valley, 4-3. The Tigers were able to push across three runs in the bottom of the third to secure the victory.
Nolan Stahly tossed six strong innings for Huron, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks, striking out nine.
Huron got a single and triple from Jeremy Hofer and a single and a double from Anderson Porisch to lead the offense.
Cooper Bischoff led the Huron running game with a pair of steals as the Tigers swiped nine bases in the contest.
The Tigers carried a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning against Hartington (NE), but Hartington was able to plate three in the top of the fifth to take control of the game and eventually win 5-3.
Jeremy Hofer opened the game on the mound, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and six walks, striking out four. Oakley Anderson got the final out of the sixth.
CJ Siedschlag was the lone Huron hitter with multiple hits, rapping out a pair of singles. Porisch and Gavin Waldner each had a triple. Bischoff and Chase Schuchhardt each stole a base.
In the opening game of the championship round Sunday, Huron defeated Rapid City Post 320 4-1 to move into the top four places.
Anderson went 4 1/3 innings to open the game for Huron, allowing one run on four hits and a pair of walks, striking out three. Siedschlag finished the game with 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief, walking one.
The Tiger offense got a pair of hits from Porisch and Hunter Fenske in the win. Waldner swiped two bases to lead Huron’s six-steal attack on the bases.
Eventual champion Marshall Black then scored early on the Tigers, building up a 5-0 lead after two innings and holding on for a 5-2 victory.
Bischoff went five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks, striking out four.
Porisch slapped a pair of singles. Bischoff stole a base.
The Tigers engaged in a see-saw affair with the Border Valley Storm in the third place contest. Huron pulled out early with two runs in the bottom of the first, only to be matched with a pair of runs by Border Valley in the top of the second.
Huron plated a run in the bottom of the third, and the Storm pushed across two in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Both teams would score three in the fifth and one in the sixth to close out the game due to time at 8-7 in favor of the Storm as Huron made the final out with the tying run on base.
Schuchhardt opened the game on the hill for Huron, going 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two. Siedschlag finished the game with 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks, striking out three.
Porisch paced the Huron attack with four hits and a pair of stolen bases. Teagen Lien had a double and Waldner added four stolen bases.
Huron will bring a 9-4 record on the road Wednesday to Mitchell.
