Boys

3rd place: Hitchcock-Tulare 60, James Valley Christian 56
HURON — The Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots took their first lead of the game right before the halftime buzzer, then held off a determined effort from the James Valley Christian Vikings, making just enough free throws down the stretch, to pull out a 60-56 win in the third-place game of the 281 Conference boys’ basketball tournament Thursday afternoon.

Jack Boomsma hit a lay up that just beat the first half buzzer, which gave the Patriots a 26-25 lead headed to the break and the Patriots withstood several attempted rallies by the Vikings. Kyle Hamilton led the Patriots with 18 points and seven rebounds in the game, while Jackson Maynard added 14 and Boomsma ended with 10.

For the Vikings, Landon Wallman led all scorers with 21 points in the contest. Landon Wager added 15 points and had eight boards, while Isaac Korell chipped in 11 points.

As could be expected in a nip-and-tuck game, the stats were pretty close as well. The Patriots had one more field goal, 24-23, than did JVC, however the Vikings had two more three-pointers than Hitchcock-Tulare did. But while the Vikings only got to the line seven times in the game, making three of them, the Patriots hit seven of 13 from the charity stripe - giving them the win and the third-place hardware.

JVC returns to action Saturday, on the road at Ipswich, while Hitchcock-Tulare hosts Redfield on Tuesday in Tulare.
