Aberdeen Smittys sweep Post 7

BENJAMIN CHASE/PLAINSMAN Post 7’s Bubba Peterson makes the pitch against the Aberdeen Smittys Saturday at Memorial Field.

HURON — The Huron Post 7 Tigers dropped a pair on Saturday to Aberdeen Smittys at Memorial Field by the scores of 8-3 and 15-1.

In the opener, Aberdeen got a home run from Casey Vining to score two in the first inning, but defensive struggles would leave those runs as the only earned runs that the Tigers would allow the rest of the way in an 8-3 loss.

Bubba Peterson opened the game on the hill for Huron, tossing 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on five hits and six walks while striking out three. Jack Pedersen completed the game for Post 7, with 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs on two hits and a walk, striking out a trio of Smittys hitters.

The Huron offense was not without runners, as the Tigers left 14 men on base.

Mason Davis led the Tigers with two singles and two walks. He also recorded a stolen base.
Logan Leyendecker had a pair of singles and stole two bases.

In the finale, Huron attempted to stay with Aberdeen but couldn’t push runs across early on, and Aberdeen plated 11 runs between the fifth and sixth innings to come away with a 15-1 victory.

Layne Wenzel allowed nine runs on seven hits and six walks over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out two.

Tanner Gilbert came in relief, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks in 2/3 inning. Brady Feenstra finished the game on the mound, throwing 2/3 inning and allowing two runs on two hits and a walk, striking out one.

No Huron hitter had multiple hits in the game. Wenzel and Trace Wenz each had doubles.

The Tigers will take a 7-17 record to the Gopher Classic next weekend in Minnesota.
