HURON — The state continued a slow and steady increase in active COVID-19 cases with its ninth consecutive week of increased new positive cases in the weekly report from the South Dakota Department of Health (DOH). The notable part about this week’s report was the significant impact in the Heartland Region.
Statewide, 972 new positive cases were added along with three new deaths and 596 new recovered cases. Active cases in the state climbed to 2,546.
Beadle County saw the largest jump of any county locally, with 32 new positive cases and five new recovered cases in Wednesday’s DOH report.
Beadle’s active cases jumped from 19 to 46. Active cases have not been that high in Beadle County since mid-March. Already, Beadle has reported more cases in the first half of June than in any of March, April, or May this year.
The Heartland Region reported 45 new positive cases, one new death, and 14 new recovered cases. Active cases in the seven-county region jumped to 81.
The death in the region was recorded in Sanborn County, the county’s seventh virus-related fatality and the 168th overall for the Heartland.
