Addressing some WheatGrass rumors

Posted

I would like to address some of the rumors that are circulating throughout our community regarding the WheatGrass Village housing project in the Southtown addition. We need to have our questions answered prior to May 16th, so our votes are based on facts and not rumors.
When the sale bills were printed, they indicated right on them that there were various size lots with endless possibilities for sale. They were listed R-2, which is single-family housing; R-3 for townhouses and R-4 for multi-family dwellings. It was never indicated on the sale bill or at the auction that these lots could not and would not be rezoned for future development.
Further, I wish to address the concerns of property owners that have their residences on 26th Street. The upscale apartment complex is being built on the north side of 24th Street, which is two blocks from their residences and not directly across the street, as is being stated. As you travel throughout our community, or any other community, you will notice that there are apartment complexes built in the same area as single-family dwellings and townhouses.

Eagle Construction is willing to invest $8.1 million of its own money, which includes $200,000 for the land. The land is not being given to the developer, as rumor has it. The $200,000 will be paid to the City of Huron. I would like to remind you that this is only Phase 1 of Eagle’s commitment to Huron’s future. The future property taxes that will be collected from this completed development and other future developments will benefit all of us.
I keep asking myself, ‘What kind of message would we be sending to future investors if this project does not pass?’ I urge you to call Mayor Aylward, Laurie at the Chamber, or Jim or Barry at GHDC, if you have any unanswered questions prior to casting your vote.
Remember, this is not only about today or tomorrow, it is also about our community’s future, which includes our children and grandchildren. I am asking you to please take time out of your busy schedule to show your support for our community by joining me on May 16th to vote Yes for Huron’s future.
Please, don’t take for granted that this will pass without your vote, because your vote will make a difference!
