SAN DIEGO Calif. — Alyce V. Geyerman Howard, 94, of San Diego, Calif., and formerly of Huron, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2019, at San Diego.
A memorial service will be held at the American Lutheran Church at Huron, in the summer of 2020.
Alyce Virginia Quale was born to William and Ida (Schultz) Quale on May 13, 1925. After graduating from Huron High School in 1943, she moved to San Diego, Calif., and worked as a secretary at Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation. She married John Geyerman and they had three children.
Alyce graduated from Huron College and taught elementary school and high school music. She also taught one year at the International School of Bangkok in Thailand.
In August 1967, she married Bernie Howard in Huron and they had one child. She worked for the federal government as a civil service examiner and ASVAB tester for many schools in the region.
Alyce traveled all over the United States as well as to Asia: Thailand, Hong Kong, and Japan. She visited friends in Norway, and enjoyed the sites there and in Paris, Cairo, and Israel.
All her life until she moved to San Diego in 2016, she was a member of the American Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir for 50 years, directed the children’s and junior choir, served as president of the ALCW, was a lector, communion assistant and usher. She served on the parish council. For 40 years she led the singing at both Huron nursing homes. Weekly group Bible study was important to her. She was a member of the Gideon Auxiliary and of Sons of Norway.
When she was 90, the Huron mayor declared May 13, Alyce Howard Day for her lifetime of volunteer work.
Alyce is survived by her four children, Jon Geyerman (Marilyn Olson Geyerman) of Williston, N.D., and Wickenburg, Ariz., Cheryl Geyerman (Lee Swanson), Larry Geyerman (Karen Erwin) of San Diego, Calif., and Billy Howard (Mimi Sternberg) of Seattle, Wash.; grandchildren, Jess Geyerman (Kimberly), Karis Walstad (Kelly), Sara Osborn, Andy Osborn, Ari Howard, Sadie Howard, Molly Nelson, Becca (Tavis) King, Maria (Kevin) Dow, Garrick Olson (Kyla), Kaylene McGlothlin, and Heidi Olson; many great-grandchildren; special nephews, David Williams (Jen), and Dan Williams; and a special niece, Diane Foltmer.
Alyce was preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother-in-law, Delaine and DeVere Williams; two infant sisters; one infant brother; one infant grandson, Joseph Geyerman; a special niece, Debbie Hofer; and ex-husbands, John Geyerman and Bernie Howard.
Her funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Kuhler Funeral Home.
