SIOUX FALLS – The 2022 South Dakota State Track & Field Meet opened Thursday in Sioux Falls for all classes, and already multiple Heartland area athletes and teams have had positive meets.
The Huron Tigers qualified the girls’ 4x100-meter relay team of Brynn Gose, Zaniya Lanier, Adison Moore, and Heavan Gainey for Saturday’s finals by finishing with a time of 50.56 in preliminary qualifying Thursday.
Sanborn Central/Woonsocket sophomore Jeff Boschee cleared 6’3” on high jump to take first place in Class A.
The meet opened with the 3200-meter relay. The girls’ Class B 3200-meter relay saw the Wolsey-Wessington team of Kendal Uttecht, Lainey Uttecht, Kelsie Roberts, and Payton Kemnitz finish eighth in the state with a time of 10:17.27.
While four area boys’ teams qualified for the boys’ Class B 3200-meter relay, only Wessington Springs’ team of AJ Neely, Porter Walz, Mason Schelske, and Sam Poncelow placed, finishing eighth with a time of 8:42.47.
The boys’ and girls’ 100-meter preliminary heats were run. The winner of each heat and then the top times to fill out a total field of eight advance to the finals on Saturday.
No area girls qualified for the finals, with Camryn Rohlfs of Redfield in Class A and Morgan Kolda of Miller in Class B coming closest of area girls, both finishing 11th in prelims.
On the boys’ side, Thackary Hansen of Iroquois/Doland and Kalen Garry of De Smet each qualified for the Class B 100-meter finals. Hansen ran a time of 11.43 seconds while Garry was clocked at 11.51 seconds to earn spots in Saturday’s final.
In the 4x100-meter relay, Miller’s girls qualified for Saturday’s time by winning their heat with a time of 51.82 seconds. De Smet’s boy’s qualified for the finals with a time of 45.52 seconds.
In the girls’ Class B shot put, Wessington Springs’ Avery Orth and James Valley Christian’s Brenna Held each earned placing marks. Held finished sixth with a throw of 36’6.25” while Orth placed seventh with a toss of 36’5”. Maggie Decker of James Valley Christian made the finals but finished short of placing.
In the girls’ Class B high jump, Ally Mullaney of Miller finished third, Kennadi Buchholz of De Smet finished fourth, and Jada Burke of De Smet finished fifth to give the Heartland strong representation on the podium.
The final event of the first day was the 1600-meter medley relay qualifying heats. In the Class B boys’ prelims, Wolsey-Wessington’s team of Joey Hoverson, Carson Zomer, Moshe Richmond, and Caleb Richmond won their heat to qualify for Saturday’s final with a time of 3:46.70.
In the Class A boys’ medley relay prelims, Clark/Willow Lake’s team of Jack Helkenn, Tyler O’Neill, Trey Huber, and Wyatt Anderson qualified for the final on Saturday with a time of 3:44.56.
