Area boys’ teams open postseason play

De Smet 79, Hitchcock-Tulare 47
DE SMET — The top-ranked De Smet Bulldogs took their first step toward a Class “B” state title Tuesday night, rolling to a 54-26 halftime lead and cruising home with a 79-47 win over the Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots in a Region 3B semifinal game.

The Bulldogs, now 20-1, with their only loss coming to Class “A” power Sioux Valley, got 30 points and 10 rebounds from Kalen Garry in the win. Rett Osthus added 18 points as De Smet shot 56% from the field in the contest.

Alex Clark led the Patriots with 10 points and Cody Wright claimed four rebounds for Hitchcock-Tulare, which closes the book on a 5-15 season.

De Smet will play Castlewood Friday night in the second game of a Region 3B doubleheader at Huron Arena.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — The Wessington Springs Spartans defeated the Estelline/Hendricks Redmen 66-33 Tuesday night and will move into the Region 3B semifinals Friday night with the win.

Mason Schelske scored 18 points and had 10 boards - both game-high totals - as the Spartans pushed their season mark to 17-4 with the win. Jacob Messmer tacked on 15 points for Springs, who will face Deubook in the first game of a Region 3B doubleheader, at 4 p.m. Friday, at Huron Arena.

Jacoby Flegel scored nine points and Joe MacAninch grabbed seven rebounds for the Redmen, who end the season with a record of 8-14.

Clark/Willow Lake 67, Hamlin 46
CLARK — The Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones started quickly and pulled away late as they demolished the Hamlin Chargers 67-46 in an opening-round game of the Region 2A playoffs Tuesday night.

The Cyclones, now 14-7, led by four at the first quarter stop and by 14 at the half en route to the win.

Four Clark/Willow Lake players dented double figures in the contest, led by 16 points from Tyler O’Neill. Kalab Marx knocked down 14 and had a game-high nine rebounds, Brady Jordan was good for a dozen points and Renner Uecker chipped in 11.

Tyson Stevenson netted 16 points for the Chargers, who end their season with a record of 11-10, while Nocholai Arbach scored 12 points and collected six rebounds.

Clark/Willow Lake moves on to face top-seeded Sioux Valley on Friday night, in Volga, for a shot at a berth in the Class “A” SoDak 16.

REDFIELD — The Redfield Pheasants picked a poor night to have their lowest offensive output of the season Tuesday evening, as the Milbank Bulldogs jumped out early and then held the Pheasants in check, as the Bulldogs took a 54-31 win in the opening round of Region 1A.

Carter Hartman scored 17 points and Bennett Schwenn chipped in 13 as Milbank improved to 11-10 on the season and will move on to face top-seeded Groton Area on Friday.

Jaxson Frankenstein led all scorers with 18 points, as the Pheasants close the season with a record of 11-10.
