Area runners finish strong at invitational

HURON — Three area runners had strong showings in the boys’ varsity race during the Clyde Cotton Invitational held Saturday at Broadland Cree Golf Course.

James Valley Chrstian’s Daniel Ayoroa was 16th with a time of 17:36.84 to edge Huron’s TJ Lien, who was 17th at 17:37.84. Cheech Harman was 20th for the Tigers at 17:52.26.

“This was the first time since I’ve been coaching that two Huron Tiger varsity boys have placed in the top 20,” Huron coach Angie Thomas said. “TJ Lien ran a personal record to place 17th and Cheech Harman ran a nice race to place 20th.

“We had a tough week of speed workouts and it was homecoming week, so I was really surprised by their performances,” she said. “I think they were a little surprised as well. This was a real confidence builder for each of them.”

Isaac Davelaar of Sioux Falls Christian won the boys’ varsity race in 16:17.86, while Keenan Urdiales of Spearfish was second at 16:20.53.

Aberdeen Central claimed the team title with 77, while Sioux Falls Christian was second at 83. Rounding out the top five were Brandon Valley at 109, Pierre at 123 and Brookings at 128.

AbbyKate Hamilton of JVC was 33rd in the girls’ varsity race at 21:32.09, while Huron’s Josie Vlieger was 53rd at 22:32.13.

“Josie Vlieger wanted to run varsity, and she clocked a good time,” Thomas said.

Alea Hardi of O’Gorman won the girls’ varsity race in 17:59.09, while Ali Bainbridge of Sioux Falls Lincoln was second at 18:04.42.

Brandon Valley had 53 points to edge Sioux Falls Lincoln by eight points for the girls’ team title.

O’Gorman was third at 83, followed by Chamberlain at 132 and Sioux Falls Christian at 137.

Huron will be at the Russ Strande Invitational in Brookings on Thursday. James Valley Christian is at the Lakeside Invitational on Wednesday in Faulkton.
