Area students qualify for SDHSRA State Finals

WATERTOWN — Several Huron area students earned berths in the South Dakota High School Rodeo Association State Finals with strong finishes during the East Region Rodeo held Saturday and Sunday in Watertown.


Payton Tobin of Wessington Springs, Tyra Gates of Miller, Victoriah Buffington of Huron, Ty Moser of Wolsey and Connor Lehman of Wolsey won events during the two-day performance.


Tobin turned in a score of 64 to win the bareback riding on Saturday.


Gates claimed the top spot in breakaway roping on Saturday and was seventh in pole bending. On Sunday, she was third in pole bending and seventh in goat tying.


Buffington was first in girls’ cutting on Saturday and second on Sunday.


Moser and Lehman combined to win the team roping on Sunday. Moser also was second in steer wrestling  on Saturday.


Kaitlyn Sandland of Letcher was second in barrel racing and eighth in goat tying on Saturday. She was third in barrel racing Sunday and 10th in pole bending on Sunday.


Devin Hunter of Huron finished second in breakaway roping on Saturday and sixth in goat tying, while placing fifth in goat tying on Sunday.


Tatum Carey was second in breakaway roping on Sunday after finishing fifth on Saturday. She was also fourth in goat tying Sunday and fifth in goat tying Saturday, while taking 10th in team roping on Sunday.


Jazz McGirr of Huron was third in breakaway roping on Sunday, while finishing sixth on Saturday and ninth in goat tying on Saturday.


Callie Aamot of De Smet was third in pole bending on Saturday.
Shyann Marzahn of Redfield was fifth in pole bending on Saturday.


Mason Moody of Letcher claimed fourth in team roping on Sunday, while Tobin Esser of Frankfort was sixth in tie-down roping on Sunday  and Tate Meyer of Huron was eighth in tie-down roping on Saturday.


The SDHSRA State Finals begins today and runs through Saturday in Ft. Pierre.
