HURON — A pair of area teams will vie for titles in both the Class B State Golf Meets, which will be held Monday and Tuesday in Yankton.
The boys’ tournament will be held at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club, while the girls’ tournament will be held at Fox Run Golf Course. The meets were originally scheduled to be held in Mitchell, but flood waters forced the events to be moved this season.
Competing in the boys’ team competition will by James Valley Christian and De Smet.
The Vikings have qualified four golfers, including three with previous state meet experience.
Leading JVC into the tournament will junior Austin Boomsma, who was 23rd at last year’s state meet golfing for Miller.
Senior Carter Wells, was the top golfer a year ago for the Vikings. He finished in a tie for 26th to just miss earning all-state honors.
Also returning with state experience this season for JVC will by sophomore Ryan Stahl. Freshman Jevin Goertz, who is making his first state tournament appearance will round out the lineup for the Vikings.
With three golfers in the field, De Smet will also be able to post a team score. The Bulldogs will be led by sophomore Cody Cavanaugh, who tied for 45th in the 2018 state tournament.
Rounding out the lineup for De Smet will be freshmen Rett Osthus and Cody Aughenbaugh.
Sophomore Jacob Messmer is also returning to the Class B Tournament for Wessington Springs. He finished tied for spot No. 77 last season in the 115-golfer field.
Also qualifying to compete in this year’s boys’ tournament is sophomore Renner Uecker of Clark-Willow Lake and freshman Carter LaMont of Highmore-Harrold.
Great Plains Lutheran is the defending Class B boys’ champion, with the previous two titles being won by Aberdeen Christian.
After finishing eighth a year ago, Miller’s Erin Moncur will make a push for a state title during this year’s Class B State Girls’ Tournament.
Moncur, a senior, is the lone qualifier for the Rustlers.
Area teams competing for a title in this year’s event, include Clark-Willow Lake and De Smet.
Senior Kaytlyn Maynard will lead a veteran group of golfers into the state tournament for Clark-Willow Lake. She finished tied for 41st in the 98-golfer field as a junior.
Also returning to the state meet for the Cyclones will be junior Maddie Forest, who was 49th last season.
Rounding out the lineup for Clark-Willow Lake will be juniors Maddie Steen and Olivia Sass.
Freshman Skylar Meier of De Smet finished just one stroke behind Maynard a year ago and will lead a trio of golfers into the meet for the Lady Bulldogs.
Junior Savannah Vincent also returns to the state meet for De Smet after finishing tied for spot No. 50 last season. Rounding out the field for the Lady Bulldogs will be senior Kennedy Ruml.
Also qualifying for the season-ending event this season was junior Katie Schmit of Sanborn Central-Woonsocket.
Burke/South Central was able to dethrone Deubrook Area as the Class B girls’ champion last season. Deubrook Area had won the four straight titles and five of the previous six state tournaments.
Clark-Willow Lake won state girls’ titles in 2009 and 2010, with Clark winning the previous five championships.
