Arment wins feature in Prelude to the Rumble

PHOTOS BY JOHN DAVIS/ABERDEEN AMERICAN NEWS Kent Arment, of Aberdeen (9) leads Morgan Ward, of Watertown (37JR), Denver Nickeson, of Veblen (11) and Josh Skorczewski, of Aberdeen (2S) as they go through turn four in the first heat of Late Model action Friday night at Brown County Speedway. In the second photo, Adam Brotherton of Huron leads a field of cars through turns one and two in a WISSOTA Midwest modified heat race on Friday at Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen.

ABERDEEN — Kent Arment won on the basis of both merit and attrition.

Arment drew the pole in Friday’s Late Model feature race at Brown County Speedway, claiming a $2,000-to-win checkered flag that finally flew after a caution-heavy race that saw a 22-car field dwindle to just 12 by night’s end.
“It was a good night for us,” Arment said. “We drew really well. We didn’t have to get around a lot of cars in the heat race. That’s what laid it all out. I’m not used to starting in front, so I did feel a little bit like a sitting duck out front. Once I got rolling, I was on the high side for a while, then I started hearing cars down (low), so I ended up migrating to the bottom and finishing the night.”

Arment’s pole position at the start allowed the Aberdeen driver to stay largely out of the fray, as multiple pile-ups picked off most of the fire-power up front. Scott Ward, who won the last two Late Model features at the track, battled Arment early, but did not finish the race. Neither did perennial firepowers Curt Gelling, Josh Skorczewski, Chad Becker and Tyler McDonald, who each, in turn, had made a run at the front.

“That’s the way it is every once in a while,” Arment said. “Usually we don’t have yellows like that in the Late Model class. I think with the little bigger pay and all the excitement and all the fast guys up front, all the guys were wanting to get the lead right now.”

Elsewhere, Selby’s Dawson Zabel picked up his first ever win at Brown County Speedway, claiming the checkered flag in the Midwest Modified division.

Zabel didn’t start up front, but moved to the lead quickly and won going away. Only one caution bunched up the field, but Zabel had more than enough firepower to put the distance back on the field.

“I’d just say it’s me and my team’s hard work and dedication to the sport,” Zabel said. “My dad puts countless hours into this and we just do what we can to be fast. That’s all we can do.”

Mike Rohwedder of Aberdeen and Adam Brotherton of Huron gave chase for a bit, but could not catch Zabel.
“It’s just awesome to win here at Brown County where I’ve basically grown up,” Zabel said.

Warner’s Trevor Nelson made it three feature wins on the season in the Super Stocks. Kyle Anderson of Jamestown, N.D. held off a pair of fellow North Dakota drivers in Billie Christ of Jamestown and Jonny Carter of Lisbon to take the win in the Street Stocks.

Racing action resumes Friday for the Brown County Speedway Fireworks Spectacular.
