The Huron Public Library is proud to present the 30th Annual Great Scarecrow Festival! Bring your family and friends to Campbell Park Oct. 6-9 to enjoy festive scarecrow displays by local individuals, organizations, and businesses.

The festival is a family-friendly event and is open to people of all ages.

• On Friday, Oct. 6, visit Campbell Park at 6 p.m. for a live reading of spooky stories and tall tales from local students. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and dress warmly to avoid the chill. Snacks and apple cider will be provided! Then at 7:15 p.m. stay for an outdoor movie featuring The Wizard of Oz.

• Then on Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., join them for an Annular Eclipse viewing party in Campbell Park. The library will provide solar eclipse viewing glasses and a sack lunch sponsored by American Bank & Trust will be given to the first 100 attendees. Bring a blanket for a picnic in the park!

Kids’ Korner (Birth-Grade 3)
It is an exciting time at the library! A lot of work is happening behind the scenes as we begin to plan out the future of the Kids’ Korner. October will bring the following event opportunities:
• Early Release Wednesday (Oct. 4) – After the Bell Party: Drop your kiddo off at the library for free snacks and fun activities! Grades K-3 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Please note that registration is required.
• The library will be sponsoring a coloring contest and a few fun activities for all to enjoy at Harvest Fest on Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2: p.m. at the fairgrounds.
• Baby Jiggles – A special time for babies, toddlers, and their caregivers to develop a love for the library! Fun and age-appropriate activities and stories will be shared by the Children’s Librarian. This is also a great time to make new friends or invite others to play along! This program is for ages 0-2 on Monday mornings from 10 to 10:30 a.m.
• Dinosaur Club for PreK-3rd grade on Friday, Oct. 13 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
• LEGO Club for K-3rd grade on Tuesday, Oct. 17 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

• Pokémon Club for K-3rd grade on Tuesday, Oct. 24 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
• Trick-or-Treat at the library on Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tweens / Teens (Grades 4 – 12)
Throughout the second week of October, the tweens/teens will explore the NASA@ My Library STEM Kits from the South Dakota State Library to coincide with the annular eclipse on Oct. 14.

They will discover the phases of the moon, how to construct a quick-scale model of the objects in our solar system, and more!

• On Oct. 16 at 4 p.m., tweens and teens will make dinosaur fossils in celebration of National Archeology Day. Then on Oct. 20 at 4 p.m., they will go on an archeology hunt to find the created fossils.
• They will end the month with a number of Halloween crafts and activities including a Lights Out Candy Scavenger Hunt on Friday, Oct. 27, from 7:30 to 7:45 p.m. for grades four through six, and from 8 to 8:15 p.m. for grades nine through 12.

Adults
• Registration for Adult Craft classes on Nov. 13 at 1 and 6 p.m. will open on Oct. 2 at 9 a.m. They will be making book safes.
• Oct. 2 is Monday Movies at 1 and 6 p.m. showing: “Going My Way” (1944) a  musical comedy featuring Bing Crosby.

• On Oct. 3 at 6 p.m., visit the library for an Author Talk and book signing with Chuck Raasch. His book, “Life Painted Red: The True Story of Corabelle Fellows and How Her Life on the Dakota Frontier Became a National Scandal,” details Cora’s experiences from her Washington, D.C., exodus to her years living among the Sioux, and her scandalous, short-lived marriage to Sam Campbell. If you would like a book signed, please bring a copy with you as books will not be available to purchase at the event.
• Oct. 4 is Gladys Pyle’s Birthday Celebration! Tour the Pyle house from 4 to 6 p.m. located at 376 Idaho Ave. S.E. Then enjoy birthday cupcakes from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the library with a short history presentation about Gladys at 6:30 p.m. Gladys Pyle was an educator, politician, businesswoman, and life-long resident of Huron. She would have turned 133 years old this year.
• Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., five published authors from South Dakota — Sallianne Hines, Christine Mager Wevik, Heidi Herman, Jim Schmidt, and Richard Skorupski — will discuss the ins and outs of editing, publishing, marketing, copyright, and more!

Adult Book Clubs
• Purposeful Retirement Book Club meets on Oct. 10 and 24 at 6 p.m. This book club is for adults who are near retirement or thinking about retirement. It will invite attendees to think about retirement in new and exciting ways! Books are available at the library circulation desk.
• Mystery Book Club meets on Oct. 12 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss “All Good People Here” by Ashley Flowers.
• Senior Center Book Club meets on Oct. 20 at 10:15 a.m. to discuss “All Adults Here” by Emma Straub. This group meets at the Senior Center located at 290 Seventh St. S.W.
• Around the World Book Club meets on Oct. 19 at noon to discuss “Edge of Dusk” by Colleen Coble.

The Library will be closed on Monday, Oct. 9, in honor of Native American Day.
