Teams are being sought for the Backyard BBQ People’s Choice Contest and the F.A.T. Friday Chili Challenge that are part of the original S.D. BBQ Championships to be held June 2-3 in conjunction with Wheel Jam, on the State Fairgrounds.
All of the meat for the BBQ Championships will be provided courtesy of event sponsors! The four meats provided will be pork butt, turkey breast, brisket and boneless leg of lamb roast. There is a $20 entry fee. People’s Choice tasting for the Backyard BBQ will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3.

There will be two methods of judging the BBQ event, through People’s Choice and Blind Judging. Cash prizes will be awarded in each division, ranging from $25 up to $150.
The F.A.T. Friday Chili Challenge will be held June 2. Businesses, individuals and groups are encouraged to participate and the entry fee is only $20. Teams can choose to enter the individual or group category. Awards will be handed out to first- through third-places in both the People’s Choice category and the Judged category.
The People’s Choice tasting of the chili begins at 5:30 p.m. June 2. The overall winner in the judged category will be an automatic qualifier to the World Open Chili Championship in Orange Beach, Ala.
